Huichol Art is a grouping of traditional styles in the arts of crafts and folk. The artists of this style of art are the Wixárikas. Huichol Art has a very particular charm: it relates its religion and cosmovision with forms and colors to create a unique aesthetic.

It belongs to the specific religious practice of an indigenous group, Huichol art has different dimensions from those of contemporary art generally found in museums and galleries. The works of Huichol artists are accepted and recognized without resistance as an otherness in art scene. One of the main features of these works is their decoration as it is very striking and colorful, in addition uses various symbols and sketches that were created several centuries ago.

We can say that the Huicholes are indigenous, the great part of them used to inhabit mountainous places, at north of Jalisco and a great part of Nayarit and Mexico. Today it’s considered that there are 50,000 for those areas.

The Huicholes are one of the ethnic groups that have managed to remain “pure” and have kept their culture virtually intact since the Spanish conquest. The origin of Huichol art lies in an ancestral tradition, where the physical transcription of the images visualized by the Huichol shamans is passed from one generation to another. The art produced by these indigenous craftsmen comes directly from the visions of Huichol shamans, which are then interpreted into tangible forms to pass these longstanding traditions from one generation to the next.

An artistic expression type of Huichol art are the pictures of yarn, which are elaborated on wooden boards with wax, or the pieces that are worked forming figures with chaquira (glass beads) on teapots, violins, turtles, etc.

Another expression is the works that are made with chaquiras or with yarn (stamen), each one carries symbolic motifs, histories of the Huichol culture and Huichol legends of its cosmogony that offer us a panorama of Huichol society.
